General Description& Requirements:
The Advanced Mathematics institute will prepare grades 8 through 12 educators to work with a target population of advanced learners in the field of mathematics. Each class will center around 3 to 4 lessons or activities dealing with challenging concepts related to the specific theme of the day, from patterns to probability. Participants will then develop portfolios of instructional materials and resources to use in their classrooms. Instruction will include the integration of technology, specifically the TI-84 graphing calculator and Geometer’s Sketchpad. Teachers who successfully complete this institute will have a greater depth of knowledge of the concepts and skills in the Mathematics Curriculum Framework and the skills assessed on the Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL) for high school mathematics. In order to receive the professional development point, the participant must complete the 12 day course and fulfill the participation requirements. Graduate credit will be available from Westfield State College. Space is limited to 25 people. Get your form here today. For more information about the course itself, please go to the Course section.

Participation Requirements:
Each institute will provide at least 45 hours of instruction between June 20 and August 31 as well as up to 20 additional hours from September 1 to December 31, 2005. Participants are required to attend all sessions. Take part in pre- and post-assessments of content knowledge, and complete projects outside of class that demonstrate their learning. Teachers’ institute-related work should be included in their personal professional development plans and should be strongly linked to school and district priorities.

This content institute is funded through a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Education.
